G.K.S.S Netball 2008
Girls' VII v G.K.S.S.
16 - 14
This is the 2nd year that we have managed to assemble an Old Girls team to play the school, and yet again it was a highly successful and competitive day for all concerned. The match played on the paddock started off with both teams a little wary of the opposition, and with shooting difficult due to the strong wind, the conditions made it extremely difficult for the shooters to settle into a rhythm. After the 1st quarter the Old Girls had a very slender 3 - 2 lead, and were starting to gain a little confidence. During the 2nd quarter, the school lost their way a little and allowed the Old Girls to dominate, with some excellent passages of play and some inspired shooting from Lucy Leigh and Emma Partridge. At half time the Old Girls had accumulated an 8 - 4 lead and were starting to believe that they could win. However, the 1st VII had other ideas, and put together a fantastic display of netball with excellent interceptions from Becky Sammon and fantastic shooting from Rachel Arnison to peg the Old Girls back to 10 - 10 at the end of the 3rd quarter. The final quarter was extremely tense with each team counteracting each others scores, until finally in the last 2 minutes the school took the lead for the first time in the match and managed to hold out until the final whistle winning 16 - 14. This was a thoroughly competitive but skilful game played with great spirit, where each player contributed to a very entertaining game.

Girls' IX v G.K.S.S.
17 - 14
This is the inaugural GKSS rounders match played at Archdeacon meadow where again a very talented group of Old Girls assembled to play the U18 rounders team. The game was played in great spirit although a few of the rules had been forgotten or changed since a few of the Old Girls last played the game. The school won the toss and put the Old Girls into bat, who struggled initially finishing with 6 ½ rounders. The school then amassed a good 1st innings total of 9 to put the Old Girls under pressure. Having managed to rekindle their knowledge of the game, the Old Girls put the school under pressure with some excellent batting from Gemma Baber and Lucy Aldridge, finally finishing with a defendable 14 rounders. The school then set out to slowly gnaw at the total scoring ½ rounders until they had overhauled the Old Girls total scoring 17 rounders. Again this was a very entertaining but competitive game which everyone hopes will become a regular feature in the GKSS calendar.

School 1st X1 v G.K.S.S.
In the Old Boys match the school won the toss and decided to bat first onwhat was a fantastic batting wicket. The current 1st X1 scored their biggest total of the season, 276-9 with many of the batsman helping themselves to big individual scores. Mike Kelly scored a rapid 39 against the quick opening attack of Ed Bressington and James Harber, whilst Joe Sherlock batted through most of the innings to score a well grafted 80. Steve Kelly played some wonderful improvised shots towards the end of the innings and made a very quick 44.
However, the school were fully aware of the strength in batting the Old Boys and knew that they would have to bowl well to defend this total. Dan Bell the young leg spinner did! He took 7-42 in a fine spell of leg-spin bowling and dismissed the Old Boys for 140 with Jared Withers being the only batsman to make a significant contribution of 54.
It was an excellent result for the school in what has been a tremendously successful season.

School 2nd X1 v G.K.S.S.
The school 2nd X1 batted 1st in this 30 overs a side match. The rules agreed before the game stated that everybody must bowl three overs. The 2nd X1 made 251-7 with Chris King scoring his maiden century. Other power hitting displays came from captain Ross Britton (23), Josh Carter (32), James Butt (44) and Adam Ford who was eventually dismissed by his father Paul.
The Old Boys made a fantastic effort to chase the score with Mark Ford smashing 49 including several huge sixes. Paul Ford missed out on finishing the game one up on his son as Adam, as he returned the earlier dismissal by removing his dad's off stump. Chris Thorne (59) and Richard Danks (25) also contributed well to the run rate, however the school kept their nerve and the bowlers continued to bowl with good line and length and bowled the Old Boys out for 202, winning the game by 49 runs.
