Half Century for Halliday
This year’s predicted barbecue summer may not have materialised, but there was good weather in June 2009 which allowed the G.K.S.S. cricket matches to take place against the School.
Cricket on Archdeacon Meadow often proves one of the most cherished memories for Old Boys and those who came to watch the annual battle against the School of today were in for a treat.
The School’s 1st XI played the first of two G.K.S.S. sides. The Old Boys batted first and posted a score of 214 off their forty overs with Sam Halliday scoring an impressive half century and other batsmen assisting him but getting out in the twenties. Accurate bowling by 1st XI players Richard Markey and Dan Bell helped keep the score to a total the school felt it could surpass.
The School started its batting well, fending off the ‘body line’ bowling of James Harber and Ed Bressington. The game swung even more in favour of the School when Drew Britton (49) decided to take on the short pitched bowling. Chris King (54 not out) eventually hit the winning runs with one over to spare. The School won by three wickets.
