About King's

The King's School has been established as the Cathedral School of Gloucester since its foundation by Henry V111 in 1541. Whilst initially a Choir School, it has blossomed over the centuries into the leading co-educational independent school in the area, with over five hundred pupils, aged three to eighteen.

In our most recent School Inspection, which took place in 2006, we received glowing reports. From Nursery to Sixth Form, inspectors were unstinting in their praise of the School’s ‘all-round education in which academic, social, creative, sporting and recreational skills are fully developed’. It was heartening, too, to read in that report of ‘the warm integrity of the school community’, for King’s is a school that cherishes the friendly and respectful relationships that exist between staff and pupils, and amongst the pupils themselves.

As this suggests, our ambition for our pupils includes but by no means ends with academic success; we recognise potential, however it manifests itself. This means that all our pupils are encouraged to develop their talents to the full. In a culture where the sentiment that ‘every child matters’ is repeated almost as a mantra by the government and educational press, we really do make it our daily business to treat our pupils as both the individuals they are and as those they aspire to become.

Visitors to King’s tend to be struck immediately by the friendly family environment, the enthusiasm of the pupils and the energetic commitment of the staff. Sport, music, art, drama and dance are only a part of the enrichment programme which I believe is one of the secrets of our success. Another is a pupil: teacher ratio of 9:1, with an average of seventeen pupils per class. An underlying belief in the importance of inspiring teaching means that pupils and teachers alike enjoy their classes and get the most out of their time here. Another is that we gain so much from working together outside of the timetabled lessons.
