Reception (Year 0)

King's Reception class is on the wonderful, spacious first floor of Wardle House. The main large classroom includes English and Maths teaching areas, as well as a superb role-play area, set in a magnificent bay window overlooking the cathedral.

The role-play area takes on different themes every few weeks, thus ensuring the imagination of the children is engaged and extended. The Reception class also have their own Library - children choose new books daily and Circle Time takes place in here, also the Listening Centre is placed here. There is a huge room which houses all the construction toys, the computer, Investigation Area, Art and Craft and sand and water activities. The excellent use of space and facilities enables the Early Learning Goals to be followed and taught extremely effectively. The emphasis in Reception is on motivation and enjoyment. The children flourish during the practical activities and the experienced staff and staff:pupil ratio ensure high quality learning and teaching.

King's Reception heavily emphasises its positive and open partnership with parents. A weekly diary is updated by the teacher to inform parents of planned activities for the week. All record keeping is accessible by parents and a fantastic detailed Learning Journey is created for each child. Parents and families are warmly invited to Reception's termly class assemblies in the cathedral and termly coffee mornings.

Specialist staff continue to teach the Reception class in Dance, Music and French. The class attends the Junior School assemblies in the cathedral twice weekly. Again, the strong relationship with Junior School is strengthened by the class walking to the Dining Hall daily for lunch.

King's Reception class is exciting, motivating and individual, it gives the children the best start possible in life. The children excel with their reading and writing through using the Jolly Phonics scheme, Maths is all practically based and their Scientific knowledge is enhanced through the use of the wonderful Wardle Garden!

Sports Day is enjoyed in the Headmaster's garden and the children all take part in the Wardle House Summer Play.

Watch your child's confidence and happiness grow in the Reception class at King's!
