"Using the past to understand the present and build the future"
Objectives/Aims:
We aim to inspire pupils to pursue their study of history, politics and related subjects beyond the classroom.
Pupils will understand:
-
The modern world based on their knowledge of the past
-
How and why events in the past have happened
-
Aspects of human character and motivation
-
The meaning of citizenship and the political structures of today
Pupils will be stretched to achieve their highest potential through the acquisition of analytical skills and disciplined study.
At The King’s School, we aim to help pupils develop historical insights through a wide range of teaching methods, both traditional and innovative, and the study of different periods. In doing so they acquire the analytical and linguistic skills which they will need in any walk of life. By the time they leave the History and Politics Department, our students should be concerned citizens capable of thinking intelligently about the society and culture in which they live. We aim to help all our students achieve their full potential through personalised learning, to encourage them to engage in independent thinking and work, and to form and express opinions and ideas based upon sound thinking and understanding.
The History Department occupies the first floor of Little Cloister House, a medieval architectural gem in the cathedral close. Built over a 13th Century monastic hall and overlooking the medieval herb garden and infirmary arches, with the Bishop’s Palace building to one side and the Cathedral towering on the other, students studying History at The King’s School are surrounded by echoes of the past. Even our classrooms offer historical treasures in the form of carved Tudor roses, fascinating fireplaces and one of the oldest classrooms in England.

We have 2 dedicated classrooms (Tudor and Churchill) each equipped with a networked computer, projector, and audio-visual equipment. In addition we have a Sixth form library, and the department houses the school museum.
