Outdoor Pursuits

The school is committed to providing all pupils with opportunities for Outdoor Pursuits as part of our personal development programme.

In Years 7, 8 and 9, there are residential courses which all pupils are strongly encouraged to take part in, with the aim of developing team building, communication and leadership skills as well as providing a fun opportunity for personal challenges which help to build self confidence and mutual support.

There are opportunities for senior pupils to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels. Expedition planning and training takes place during school Activity times. The Forest of Dean, Cotswolds, Brecon Beacons, Dartmoor, Snowdonia and The Lake District are all recently used venues for expeditions.

A residential trip to Snowdonia for all members of the Lower Sixth earlier in the Year, builds on skills and experiences from earlier years in a more challenging environment.

There is a flourishing Outdoor Pursuits society which organises termly weekend trips for enthusiastic students in the senior part of the school. Recent trips have been to The Lake District, Cornwall, Cader Idris, Snowdonia and the Three Peaks of the Yorkshire Dales.

There are regular opportunities for students to take part in a major overseas expedition. The most recent one in 2009 was to Ecuador. Previously, Mongolia and the Himalayas have been destinations. The next expedition is likely to be in 2011.
