Snowdonia Weekend Saturday 20th - Sunday 21st March 2010

After the Open Morning on Saturday, seven members of the Outdoor Pursuits Society headed to Snowdonia. As on several previous occasions we combined forces with Dean Close School and this certainly provides an extra dimension while broadening the experience for the students and staff.

Saturday evening was spent in Capel Curig watching the England vs France Six Nations game while taking on board plenty of calories, in preparation for Sunday’s challenge.

After a relaxing night in the hostel the group were up 6am on Sunday and were greeted by a crisp and sunny morning. The initial climb out of the Ogwen valley to the summit of Pen yr Ole Wen at 978m was steep and challenging however all responded well. The next peak tackled within the Carneddau range was Carnedd Dafydd. There were spectacular views as the group traversed the high ridge towards the third peak, Carnedd Llewelyn. At 1064m this is the 3rd highest peak in Wales and higher than Sca Fell Pike in England. There was still a fair amount of snow on the summit which just added to the fun.

From the summit of Carnedd Llewelyn the weather changed completely with low cloud and rain demanding a careful descent along a relatively narrow ridge back down to the valley.

It was a fantastic weekend and everyone demonstrated brilliant mountain walking abilities.
