LANGUAGES IN THE CURRICULUM

In an all-through school such as King’s we have the benefit of being able to start teaching Modern Languages to children at a young age.   Junior School pupils learn French from Y3 and have taster lessons of other languages.

In Y7, which is a point at which many new pupils join the school, all pupils will learn French and Spanish. As they progress through the curriculum, they may choose to carry on both languages to GCSE or just one of them. Most pupils do at least one MFL to GCSE. Being an independent school we are able to offer sets of a manageable size.

Both French and German are offered at ‘A’ level in the Sixth Form.  Spanish will replace German in 2008.

Classical languages are also strong at King’s.  Latin is part of the core curriculum in Y8-Y9 and attracts good numbers at GCSE.  The school offers both Latin and Greek to ‘A’ level.

The Modern Languages department has had a very good academic record over many years.  Whilst some students have used their Modern Languages experience to make successful Oxbridge applications,  we also take pride in the department’s track record with lower sets at GCSE.

Every other year the department takes Y7 and Y8 pupils on a week’s course in Normandy, and there are plans to start up a Spanish trip for Y9 and Y10 pupils in 2007. Sixth Formers have the opportunity to take part in work experience in France and Germany.

THE MODERN LANGUAGES DEPARTMENT

The Modern Languages department consists of a small team of motivated teachers with high aspirations, working together to communicate their love of language to pupils of all ages and abilities.  There are four full-time teachers of French, German and Spanish, a part-time French assistante and two part-time French teachers in the Junior School.  The school has four classrooms devoted to Modern Languages in a departmental area.
