There are three kinds of people: those who can count and those who can't”

The mathematics’ department is one of the major departments within the school. Five full-time, dedicated and fully qualified teachers deliver the curriculum, each teaching across the age range from First Form (Year 7) to Sixth Form (Further Mathematics, A2).

First to Fifth Form

Pupils at King’s School spend a lot of time studying mathematics and our aim is to enable all of our pupils to experience the joy of being successful in their studies. We aim to stimulate a positive approach to mathematics within our students and hopefully this will allow our pupils to:

  • Be able to talk, think, write and illustrate mathematically with confidence
  • Appreciate the place of mathematics in the world-at-large
  • Be willing and able to consider a range of problems in a mathematically logical, precise and creative manner
  • Be able to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Have a firm foundation for appropriate further study

The First Form is setted within a few weeks of starting school and thereafter all teaching is done within setted classes. Top sets usually comprise of 18-20 pupils with fewer pupils in the lower sets. Where possible we aim to have approximately 10 pupils in the lowest set thus allowing for targeted help for those pupils who need it most.

In the First to Third forms we aim to give our pupils a solid grounding in three important areas of mathematics:

number and algebra             shape and space      data handling

In the Fourth and Fifth forms pupils are prepared for the Edexcel GCSE examinations.
