Welcome to Religious Studies at King’s

Religious Studies is a thriving subject at King’s, as befits a Cathedral School. We hope that RS will help the pupils to appreciate the spiritual dimensions to life, to develop a greater understanding of the major world religions, and a sense of respect for principles, values and lifestyles which may be different from their own. RS encourages people to think about meaning, purpose and commitment and the continuing significance of religion in the world today. We hope that pupils will develop a real sense of enquiry, and will enjoy the lively discussion and debate which RS lessons often provoke. Religious Studies is not about proclaiming simple certainties; it is about helping young people (and staff) to think about some of the most important questions in life!

All pupils in the Senior School have 2 periods of RS each week in the First to Fourth Forms (Years 7 – 10).  They study a Philosophy and Ethics course for GCSE and are then entered for the Short Course qualification at the end of the Fourth Form.

Public exam results have been consistently excellent over many years.  A pleasing number of Sixth Formers take the subject for A or AS Level and in recent years quite a number of students have gone on to study Theology or Philosophy at University. A number of former pupils now teach Religious Studies at other schools!

The department plays an important role in the religious and spiritual life of the school. Each of the 4 teachers timetabled for Religious Studies this year makes a major contribution to Chapel and to the special services held at King’s.
