The Organic Vegetable Garden

In addition to the other environmentally friendly projects that King's already does: recycling paper, ink jet cartridges and mobile phones to the building of the wildlife haven and pond Miss Barber and Mr Lloyd have now begun another project together with a small group of students in the senior school with the aim of growing organic vegetables. At the end of June 6 newly dug plots appeared in the walled garden of Little Cloister House, the aim is for a pair of students to share in the care of the 3metre plots growing vegetables that they like to eat plus hopefully with a few left over to sell. They are beginning with growing pumpkins and new potatoes that should be ready to harvest by Christmas time. Next term they will plan which vegetables to grow over winter so they can be eaten in the spring. Robert Ibbetson is particularly keen to be involved as he wants to be a landscape architect, and he is currently building a compost maker, other projects will follow in time. Ben Overs, Robin Jacks, Harry Cole, Alex Etchells, James Wenn, Sarah Dowler, Will Glossop, Rob Ibbetson, Louise Graulich , and Charlie Thwaites are keen supporters of the project and are determined to make it a success. The aims of the project are simple: for students to have fun growing vegetables while at the same time being able to eat what they grow which will taste much better than shop produce.
