School Hall

The School Hall was built in 1964 to the delight of the King’s School Dramatic Society.  The first play to be performed by them on the new stage was William Shakespeare’s ‘The Taming of the Shrew’ and has since this production seen many more students perform in the Hall, including the actor Simon Pegg.

Today the Hall is the hub of day to day life at King’s. It is also used by local Dance Groups, Gloucester Comedy Festival, The Mariners Church, Cotswold Chess Congress as well as hosting many academic lectures and seminars.

The Hall is an ideal space for entertaining large groups of people with easy access and parking facilities. The Hall also features recently installed, state-of-the-art, audio-visual equipment with large projection screen.

Ivor Gurney Hall

The Hall was formerly the King’s School ‘Old Gym’ until it’s restoration which was completed in February 2016, when it was opened as new facility to enhance the performing arts within the School.   Ivor Gurney Hall is named in honour of one of the school’s most distinguished musicians and poets.

Its key feature is the intricate arch-braced roof, which has now been restored in the striking multi-coloured style associated with Augustus Pugin and other masters of the 19th century Gothic Revival.  It blends the striking use of medieval colour with the type of creative exuberance fitting for a centre dedicated to the performing arts, in what can only be described as a uniquely imaginative and bold design. The Perpendicular window at the east end, the Rose window at the west end and the square ecclesiastically-shaped windows along the side of the building has also all been restored to bring out their original elegance.

The hall, which is equipped with a state of the art sound system, is used extensively by the School’s performing arts students as well as local choral / historic groups.
