Jargon Buster

The Jargon Buster is designed to demystify some of the terms and acronyms that exist within the independent school structure, and some that are also peculiar to The King's School. This is mostly aimed at first time visitors, but also a good source of reference for those who have always wondered about a specific expression.


  • Alumni: Former Pupils of The King's School
  • Bursar: Official who controls the financial management of the school
  • Cathedral Chapter: Cathedral equivalent of school governors. Are responsible for the day-to-day running of the Cathedral.
  • Dulverton: The Sixth Form Centre
  • Exhibition: An academic award, second only to the scholarship.
  • GKSS: Gloucester King's School Society. The society of the former pupils of the school.
  • HMC: The Headmaster's and Headmistress's Conference
  • KSPA: King's School Parents Association. Involved in supporting and promoting the school, raising funds, fostering an effective liaison between School, parents, governors and staff.
  • Lent Term: Spring Term: runs from January to March
  • Michaelmas Term: Autumn Term: runs from September to December
  • Paddock:General term for main school parking area, netball courts and junior school sports field.
  • Pastoral: Relating to the responsibility and care of the emotional well being and development of the pupils.
  • Prep:Years 3 and 4 in Junior School
  • Registrar: Keeps records of enrolment and admissions
  • SMT: Senior Management Team including the Headmaster, Deputy Head (Academic), Deputy Head (Pastoral), Head of Junior School, Bursar, Estates Manager.
  • STEAKS: Science and Technology at The King's School. Comprised of staff members and parents with an engineering background, STEAKS offers advice and help on a range of activities involving science and technology. Its aim is to promote careers in science, technology engineering and maths.
  • Transition:Year 2 in Junior School
  • Trinity Term: Summer term: runs from April to July
  • Upper/Lower Shell: Years 5 and 6 in Junior School
  • Wardle House:The King's School Nursery
