Checking Email from Home

The King's School is going to allow pupils in the 1st Form and the Lower 6th to have a school e-mail account on a trial basis.

In order to have a school e-mail account, pupils must read the agreement below. By signing, you are accepting the terms and conditions of using school e-mail. If you abuse school e-mail in any way, it will be withdrawn and further sanctions may follow.

The purpose of using e-mail is to make contact with others who could help with school work, or to contact family and friends outside of the School. Pupils are expected to be responsible when using e-mail, so it must not be used in any way that could be harmful or distressing to others.

Pupils are only allowed to use the e-mail address provided by the School. The use of other Web-based servers (such as Hotmail and MSN) is not permitted as these sites cannot be easily monitored. The School policy is to block pupil access to such Web-based e-mail services. SMS, or text messaging services, are also blocked to discourage the sending of anonymous messages.

The following points should always be followed when using e-mail:

  • E-mail must not be used to display, store or transmit data that may be considered as offensive, defamatory, libellous or otherwise inappropriate
  • Always use appropriate language when sending e-mail
  • Never give personal details to strangers, or arrange to meet strangers, by e-mail
  • Inform the ICT Department of any offensive e-mail that may have been sent
  • Do not waste time or resources sending e-mail to people in School when it would be just as easy to speak to them
  • Sending e-mail to other pupils within the School is only permitted for clear educational reasons
  • Pupils are not to e-mail members of staff unless directly instructed to do so for a specific purpose
  • To reduce the risk of viruses that may be attached to e-mail, only open e-mails and/or attachments from reliable sources
  • If there is doubt about the source of an e-mail, delete it from the account without delay and alert the ICT Department

The ICT Department may monitor any network usage and activity for the purposes of:

  • Network and system security
  • Compliance with legal requirements
  • Ensuring that school rules and regulations are being followed

This Code of Conduct may be updated and/or changed at any time. The e-mail facility may be revoked at any time.
