Supporting excellence

King's has a growing reputation for sports.

The school aims to instil in each individual a positive and lasting interest in physical activity and an enjoyment of sport at both competitive and social levels.

Just as important, we believe that boys and girls of all ages should grasp the ideals of team spirit, fair play and healthy competitiveness. These are fundamental values which will serve them well throughout their lives.

The PE staff are just as concerned with helping those with less natural ability to enjoy this important part of school life and fulfil their potential, as they are with guiding gifted young athletes in the pursuit of excellence.

King's is proud of its status within the sporting community of Gloucestershire.

Within the past year we have been granted academy status not only in cricket but also in rugby. We have for many years been proud of our first class county wicket on Archdeacon Meadow, the annual Gloucester Cricket Festival, and our association with Gloucestershire County Cricket Club. We can now look forward to a strong alliance with Gloucester Rugby Club and the benefit this will have not only on school rugby but also on youth rugby in the area.

Achieving results

Although the atmosphere at King's is not that of an academic 'hothouse', our pupils regularly surpass themselves in public examinations. This is particularly notable at 'A' level and is reflected in favourable comparisons with predictions made by national standardised tests.

Three factors are of paramount importance in our pupils' success:

Positive relationships

The building-blocks for eventual success lie in the relationships pupils establish during their time at School. Thanks to the small size of the school, supportive relationships, strong friendships and a genuine mutual respect are fostered among pupils and with those who teach them. These qualities allow pupils to feel that they really matter and their efforts are valued.

A sense of balance

Pupils who achieve most academically tend to be those who are busily involved in all sorts of other school activities alongside their work. They benefit from participating in sport, music, drama and the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Making the most of what we can offer at King's also helps pupils to learn to prioritise and use their time effectively.

Commitment

There is, of course, a distinct correlation between results and hard work. The school day at King's is a demanding one and expectations are high. We aim to make learning exciting, and to support our pupils in all they do. At the same time, we encourage them to take responsibility for their own learning and to realise that, in the long run, effort is as important as ability.
