Preparing for independence

With greater emphasis on private study, self-discipline and self-motivation, students in the Sixth Form receive a great deal of individual attention and support from personal tutors and the pastoral care team.

They also benefit from their own dedicated Sixth Form Centre in Dulverton House, one of the most ancient and attractive buildings in the whole of Gloucester.

We encourage our pupils to think for themselves and make informed decisions. To help them in this, we provide a continuous, structured programme of careers guidance supported by careers specialists on the staff, and the Independent Schools Careers Organisation. Close relationships between staff and pupils ensure that careers advice is based upon a real understanding of each pupil's abilities and aspirations.

Most of our Sixth Form students move on to higher education and we regard it as very important to equip them with the skills and self-discipline they will need at university. The Sixth Form Centre, and a teaching style which encourages independent thought, enable Sixth Formers from King's to take university in their stride. The transition from Fifth Form to Sixth Form is carefully and sensitively managed because the style of learning is so different at this stage. Our Sixth Form Induction Week, held after GCSE exams, is designed to help students prepare for this change.

There is a wide range of 'A' Level and 'AS' Levels, as well as our own General Studies courses, from which to choose. Each student receives careful guidance in their choice.

"I believe that a good education is one which enables the students to decide for themselves the kind of life they want to live. It should also develop qualities and capacities that lead to mastering the art of living. Whilst 'A' level results in recent years are a source of pride, we consider that a full programme of activities and enrichment courses are essential in the preparation of our students for their future. We wish to see the Sixth Form experience at this school underpin each student's values and provide a stimulating and exciting environment within which each individual can thrive to the full"
