History and Politics

"Using the past to understand the present and build the future"

The History and Politics Department occupies the first floor of Little Cloister House, a medieval architectural gem in the cathedral close. Built over a 13th Century monastic hall and overlooking the medieval herb garden and infirmary arches, with the Bishop's Palace building to one side and the Cathedral towering on the other, students studying History at The King's School are surrounded by echoes of the past. Even our classrooms offer historical treasures in the form of carved Tudor roses, fascinating fireplaces and one of the oldest classrooms in England.

We have 2 dedicated classrooms (Tudor and Churchill) each equipped with a networked computer, projector, and audio-visual equipment. In addition we have a Sixth form library, and the department houses the school museum.

Sixth Form historians and politicians will:

  • Be motivated to read round, discuss and debate issues.
  • Engage with difficult subject matter to further their understanding.
  • Understand societies and the role of the individual within society.
  • Have enriching opportunities and engage with them.
  • Learn to communicate coherently and passionately about their subject.
