King's Eco Committee
As a school, we take great pride in our ongoing commitment to the environment.
Our dedicated Eco Committees in both the Junior and Senior School actively lead a range of sustainability initiatives, while also helping to educate our community on the practical steps we can all take to lessen our impact on the planet.
Both our Senior School and Junior School follow their own eco codes, which underpin all of our actions and projects. The codes serve as a constant reminder of the values we stand for and the choices we make every day.
Here are some of the initiatives that our Junior and Senior School Eco Committee's have introduced and some of the awards that we have won:
Eco Schools Green Flag Award
2023 - with distinction
2024 - with distinction
PAGES (Primary Awards for Green Education in Schools)
2024 - Winner of the Green Action Takers category (regional champions and national champions). You can read about our award-winning work on the PAGES website.
2024 - Green Creators - Runners Up
Earth Day
We mark Earth Day every year with creativity and purpose.
2023 - Year 5 and Year 6 recorded a moving and powerful performance of the song, 'I am the Earth' - a dialogue between the Earth and the world's children that focuses on the relationship that we have with our planet.
2024 - Junior School children designed posters to promote recycling.
2025 - Pupils created inspiring posters and videos for a Social Media competition, featuring everything from upcycling ideas and eco tips to celebrating environmental heroes and our beautiful planet.
World Ocean Day
2023 - Pupils conducted science investigations exploring ocean layers and how icebergs float.
2025 - We held a 'Blue Day' to raise money for the Marine Conservation Society, a UK marine charity, and we ran an Eco Art challenge, where the children made creations out of rubbish that may have otherwise ended up in our oceans.
E-Waste Day
For E-Waste Day in 2024, our Senior and Junior School Eco Committees organised a recycling collection for old electrical devices, cables and chargers. They then organised for it to be taken to the local recycling facility in Gloucester.
Meeting with Thomas Franks
Our Senior and Junior School Eco Committees met with Genevieve Boast, who is Group Head of Sustainability at Thomas Franks, who are our school caterers. Members of the Eco-Committee were able to discuss with Mrs Boast their amazing ideas to reduce waste and to reduce our carbon footprint at school.
Iron Man Blankets
Our Junior School Eco Committee collected crisp packets to send to the Iron Man in Frome, who ironed them together to create insulated sleeping bag liners for the homeless. It takes about 150 crisp packets to create one liner, which make a real difference to the homeless, helping to keep them warm and prolong the life of their sleeping bags as well as helping to reduce landfill.
Visit from Counsellor Richard Cook
Councillor Richard Cook from Gloucester City Council came in to talk to our Junior School Eco Committee about their concerns about waste and recycling.
MP Richard Graham
MP Richard Graham came to visit our Junior School Eco Committee to discuss the biodiversity around our school grounds.
Visit from Severn Trent Water
Severn Trent came in to do workshops with the Junior School children about the world of water and sewerage so the children could understand more about water waste.
Woodland Trust Tree Planting
Members of our Junior and Senior School Eco Committees planted young trees around the school site. The trees were all supplied by The Woodland Trust, as part of the Queen's Green Canopy initiative, to honour Her late Majesty's long service.
RSPB Big Schools' Birdwatch
As part of our commitment to biodiversity, we took part in the RSPB Big Schools’ Birdwatch in 2025. This nationwide initiative invites schools to spend an hour observing and recording the birds seen in their grounds. It helps the RSPB monitor bird populations across the UK and gives our pupils a fantastic opportunity to connect with nature, develop observation skills, and contribute to real scientific research. It’s also a fun way to learn about local wildlife and the importance of protecting their habitats.
Eco Charities
We have raised money for the following charities:
- Just One Tree - We all dressed in Green and raised £200
- Marine Conservation Society - We all dressed in blue and raised £860
ECO Tips for Home
At home, we encourage families to live more sustainably with a range of practical eco tips. Posters around the school provide advice on how to save water, reduce energy use, and make environmentally conscious choices, such as turning off your engine in the school car park. We've also compiled an exciting list of biodiversity activities that families can try in their gardens or local green spaces, from building bug hotels and wormeries to creating bird feeders and butterfly puddles.
