Senior School Event

Organised by King’s Economics and Business Department, this year's Business on the Sofa event had a theme of  'Jobs and Industries of the Future'.

The format was talk show style, and the four guests all had different stories to share about how their own career paths.

The exceptional host, Kate Bedwell, managed the event very successfully.  As a woman in business herself, she was able to ask relevant questions, share her own story and give useful advice for the audience.

Further along his career was Gareth Williams, the founder and owner of Caplor Ltd, a renewable energy business.  His takeaway to pupils was to not worry about leaving school knowing exactly what you want to do as opportunities arise constantly, one of which will be suited to you. In addition, Gareth advised that having the right attitude towards work is equally important as having the right skills.

Anton Gabb, a former student at King’s from age 2-18, returned to share how he started his marketing agency, NOVA+. He talked about the many opportunities in technology, which was particularly inspiring to those interested in computer science.

Another former student, Marcus Sprason, spoke about his experience doing a Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship in Cyber Security.

Lastly, Rowan Edlington also works in the Cyber Security industry and joined EDF Energy as a Security Engineer. As a young woman in a male-dominated workforce, she shared her own struggles and also how she overcame them.

To finish the evening, the audience were able to ask the speakers any questions.  It was a fantastic event which greatly inspired many of our older pupils who will shortly be taking their next steps into the world of work or higher education.
