Trips Senior School

Over half-term twenty-five Art, English and Business Studies students and four members of staff headed across the pond for an action packed five days in New York.

They say, of course, that New York is the city that never sleeps, and we were determined to make the most of every moment that we were there.

After a long flight and checking in to our hotel, we headed out for dinner to the Hard Rock Café, taking in the sights and sounds of Broadway and Times Square.

Our first full day began with a visit to one of New York’s most iconic landmarks, The Statue of Liberty. Taking the ferry across to Ellis Island and Liberty Island, we spent the morning visiting the grounds of Liberty Island, the Statue of Liberty Museum and the Ellis Island Immigration Museum.

In the afternoon, the group split with some visiting the Federal Reserve Bank and the rest taking a walk over Brooklyn Bridge and DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass), a former industrial neighbourhood of Brooklyn now known for its art galleries, independent boutiques and tech start-ups.

In the evening, the group reunited for an early dinner in Little Italy, before taking in a show on Broadway – a must do for a visit to New York!

Our second morning included a walk along The Highline, a one-and-a-half-mile park and walkway built along a former New York elevated railway, along the west of Manhattan from Hudson Yards down to Chelsea and The Meatpacking District. It offers unique views of the city and Hudson River, weaving through the buildings, with public art on display and fascinating architecture all around you.

In the afternoon, we again split with visits to the United Nations Headquarter, The Tenement Museum and The Whitney Museum of American Art.

We finished the day with a trip up the Empire State Building and enjoyed incredible views of Manhattan by night.

Our last full day saw a variety of visits from a tour of Madison Square Gardens, The Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art to a guided tour of Hershey’s Chocolate World Store, as well as some free time to enjoy the relative calm and open space of Central Park.

In the evening, we headed back to Madison Square Garden to watch an exhilarating and fast paced game of ice hockey.

Our final day in the city saw us take a Stage Door Tour at Radio City Music Hall before checking out of the hotel and heading back to JFK for our flight home.

Thank you to all the staff who organised such a fantastic trip - we loved every minute!

Toby, in Lower Sixth, gave us his account of the trip:

During the half term break a group of English, Art and Business students took a trip over to New York. It was a great, action-packed few days where there were visits to such locations as the Empire State Building and Statue of Liberty and evening entertainment from the musical Moulin Rouge on Broadway and a very atmospheric ice hockey match at Madison Square Gardens.

During the day, we split into our different groups and whilst the Art students enjoyed trips to MOMA and the Met galleries, the Business students had time at the United Nations and Hershey's. The English students walked all the way through Greenwich village, taking in sites such as Grace Church from Edith Wharton's 'The Age of Innocence' and Henry James' Washington Square, and finishing with a visit to the Tenements Museum where we learned about life for early 20th century immigrants in the Great Depression.

The students all enjoyed walking the streets, seeing the sights and, of course, eating the various foods on offer. It was truly a great experience.
