We are a STEAM school!

This week our fabulous STEAM Team of parents and alumni who work in fields relating to Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Maths met online to discuss ways in which they can assist the school with exciting STEAM initiatives.

The Junior School shared some great highlights from the year so far, which included:

  • 'Wild weather' reports across the world and measuring real weather conditions at school; Lower Transition Science (Year 1)
  • Correlating between age and height, foot size and distance jumped in a great outdoor activity using Science and Maths.  Upper Transition Science (Year 2)
  • Making their own chocolate rocks to help them to establish the different formation of rocks! Mr Morton also paid a visit to share some examples of the rocks in his collection. Lower Prep Science (Year 3)
  • Practical investigations using circuits, switches, buzzers and testing a variety of conductors and insulators and a visit to the Senior labs for a lesson from Mr Carter on how sound waves travel along a slinky! Upper Prep Science (Year 4)
  • A carbon absorption activity, separating dry mixtures using different separating techniques, a salt-water investigation to look at the process of dissolving and evaporation, irreversible and reversible reaction demonstrations in the Senior School lab as well as creating planet posters. Lower Shell Science (Year 5)
  • Using microscopes from the senior school to observe micro-organisms and a spirometer to measure individual lung capacity and even had a go at making blood smoothies. They are looking forward to a pluck dissection with Mr Rouffet in a few weeks' time. Upper Shell (Year 6)

These are wonderful experiences for children who are still only in primary school.
